Our Co-Founder to Co-Chair BIMA's Sustainability Council

4th February 2020

BIMA is the UK’s largest digital and tech community, with a 5,000+ strong membership including strategists, creatives, technologists, educators and brands. One of the defining elements of BIMA is its 18 Councils and Think Tanks which explore the latest thinking, ensure representation and inclusiveness, and prepare the industry for the future. Now, BIMA has announced the latest expansion to its councils and we’re extremely proud that our Co-founder, James Cannings, is Co-chair of the new Sustainability Council. Alongside Good Loop’s CEO, Amy Williams, James will be responsible for driving forward the council’s mission:

As the innovators of the 21st century, we have a responsibility to do good. So we’re building a framework to champion change and encourage BIMA members to take action.

At the end of last year we made sustainability a central business strategy for MMT Digital with our Net Carbon Negative pledge. Passionate about decarbonising the digital sector, James is leading the movement as we reduce our carbon footprint as rapidly as possible with the aim to become a Net Carbon Negative company this year. We have made impressive progress so far and are already offsetting more C02 than we produce, doing all that we can to support and influence our people and clients as well as measuring and reporting on our combined impact.

Beyond this, we are encouraging the wider digital industry to rapidly decarbonise and have made our processes, C02 models and tools available to download in our starter pack.

A key short-term goal will be to improve and simplify the pack and to launch it through the Sustainability Council, under the BIMA brand. This will help drive awareness and support for the rapid decarbonisation of BIMA members, many of whom have already started on this journey while others are looking for a starting point to move quickly.

The launch of this new BIMA Council is an exciting step towards decarbonising the digital sector and we’re extremely proud that James, together with Amy, will be driving this change.

James commented: “It’s an honour to be appointed Co-chair of the new BIMA Sustainability Council as it’s something I’m extremely passionate about. I’m pleased with the progress we have made  since launching our pledge and I’m looking forward to sharing our processes throughout the BIMA community and beyond. My hope is that, as the world’s innovators, the digital sector, can decarbonise very quickly and become a shining example of low-carbon, commercially successful businesses.”
