Why COVID-19 means Digital Marketing Is More Important Than Ever

With the world spending more time at home, and businesses constantly adapting to the changing restrictions and regulations around COVID-19, it’s safe to assume that the way people run their businesses and specifically, their marketing, has already changed, and is likely to change further. It’s no secret that people are spending far more time online; not only to access important information and updates, but to try to continue accessing and purchasing everything they need, despite lockdown. Although non-essential shops are reopening soon, until recently, the digital world was the only way for businesses to connect with their customers. Whilst this captive audience may be venturing further afield soon, there’s certainly no reason to believe that things will go back to normal. At Wriggle, we believe that being active online is more important than ever and if your business is not investing in its digital marketing, it might be a good time to start.

WHAT’S CHANGED?

Aside from the obvious change of businesses having to move all of their activity online, we can expect to see some shifts in consumer behaviours and trends following the COVID-19 pandemic, so it’s important to have an internal review of any changes you may need to make to your marketing strategy in order to accommodate this. Some questions you should ask are:

  • Have the needs of my typical customer changed?
  • Are the services we offer still of importance/relevance to our target audience?
  • How are my competitors responding to the current climate?
  • Can the business provide further services/products to benefit the customer?

Now is the time to take a closer look at your target customer and refine your digital strategy. With everyone having adopted pretty much the same lifestyle over the last couple of months, returning to ‘normal’ life could see a number of shifts in consumer needs. Perhaps the initial reaction will be to get offline and get outside and go to shops, restaurants, theatres etc. Or maybe a habit will have formed and people will maintain their online activity. What we do know is that this crisis could absolutely evoke change in people’s priorities, values and attitudes - all of which could affect how they spend their time and money.

BE PROACTIVE

While we can make assumptions about how to conduct business once the pandemic has begun to decline, there are no guarantees. Don’t assume that your customers will remain loyal - reach out and find a way to connect your brand to their needs.

Strong brand loyalty will be essential during these times.

USE THE DATA

The ability to measure and track results with your digital marketing is a real asset during such uncertain times. Make sure you’re

using the power of this data to guide your business decisions.

You may not be able to predict the environment of the post-COVID-19 business world, but you can absolutely learn where to target your efforts online. Making sure you have your website and digital marketing channels fully optimised will ensure you’re able to successfully analyse any trends or opportunities for improvement.

DELIVER VALUE

In an ever-changing digital world, the importance of digital marketing will be even greater following the COVID-19 crisis. If you’re not already, make sure that your business is online and delivering value to its customers.
