Why Update Your Website During COVID-19

Over the last few weeks, some businesses have been anxiously putting their online updates on pause, presumably for fear of getting it wrong or because they’re unsure how much business it will generate in these uncertain times. Well, at Wriggle, we think this might be a mistake!
There’s been a real surge in online activity, and understandably so. This means that it’s more important than ever that your website is available, accessible and discoverable. Here are some ideas to get you started:

INFORM YOUR CUSTOMERS

Unless you specifically say otherwise, your customers could assume that your business is running at half-speed or that services have been altered during the current crisis. Even if this is the case, make sure the information is coming from your website.
As a consumer, one of your first questions when considering a purchase at the moment is likely to be ‘are they still open?’ or ‘will I still be able to order/get in touch?’. If you’re communicating what your position is on your website, then they won’t have to hesitate in their decision making. Here are some ways to do this:

  1. Have a COVID-19 Page - a defined space for you to provide up-to-date information that’s easy to find and update. Make sure to have a clear link to it from your homepage and social media accounts. You could include an FAQ section to organise your information.
  2. A banner on your homepage - this is a quick and accessible way to inform your customers of any updates. It could simply be a ‘business as usual’ message or could be updated periodically with insights from your employees. We love this example from one of our clients, Tyne North Training - it’s clear and personal.
  3. Be resourceful - You may have seen some businesses having designated spaces on their sites for COVID 19 resources. This could be as simple as linking to official advice and updates from your website, or advice columns on how to navigate through the lockdown.

Top tip: make sure to include your updates as site links. Not sure how? We’d be happy to help.

KEEP EVERYTHING IN SHAPE

With increased activity online, you need to make sure your website is giving optimal performance. By testing the accessibility, security and usability of your site, you’ll be keeping your bounce rate in check, as well as ensuring your customers are able to access the information they need.

UPDATE YOUR LISTINGS

Google has asked businesses to ensure their Google My Business listings are up-to-date if your business is affected by COVID-19. This could be:

  • Change in business hours
  • Delays in service
  • Extra services provided
  • Temporary closures

Google has provided a useful document with all the information you need on how to do this.
Communication is key during these times and a strong website will help communicate to your audience that you’re keeping on top of things.
