When you consider a microsite build in Kentico, there are a whole load of things that need to be considered: ‘What is the aim?’ and ‘What will the design be like?’ are common questions that come up. However, one area that should be carefully considered is your Kentico licence. Will your microsite be covered under your current Kentico licence, or will you need a new one.

It is very easy to get carried away with the design and then suddenly find that you might not be able to achieve your goal. Unfortunately, there isn’t really a straight forward answer!

Confused? Well, help is at hand, because there are some golden rules for what you can and can’t do with your Kentico licence:

• What if you want to use a different domain name to your main site? This is considered to be an additional site and an alternative licence will be needed if you have a 1 site licence. 
• However, if you are using an alias or a sub-domain, then the site can sit in the same content tree and act as a sub-section of the site, BUT one of the following two rules must apply. 
• Either the same Masterpage, Main Navigation and the same Templates have to be used. 
• Or, the Masterpage and Main Navigation are the same, but the Templates can be different. 
• If you don’t want to have the same Masterpage and Main Navigation, then a new licence could be required. 

Now that you know the rules for your Kentico Licence, you can decide on your approach, focus on the design and achieve your goals for your Microsite!
