Word Nerds and Grammar Geeks

1st October 2019

At Milestone we don’t just work on rebranding projects or digital marketing campaigns, sometimes we’re called on for pure graphic design. This was the case recently when we were asked to design two new books, ‘Grammar Geek’ and ‘Word Nerd’ for SJG Publishing and Octopus books.

As self-confessed logolepts (word enthusiasts) we jumped at the chance to have a flick through the books. Here’s what we discovered:

Everyone loves a Hendiatris (aka the rule of three)

  • ‘Snap! Crackle! Pop!’
  • ‘I came, I saw, I conquered!’
  • ‘Sex, drugs and rock & roll.’

Paraprosdokians always make you think twice

  • ‘A bank is a place that will lend you money, if you can prove that you don’t need it.’ – Bob Hope
  • ‘I’ve had a perfectly wonderful evening. But this wasn’t it.’ – Hugh Herbert

These collective nouns are wonderful

  • ‘A parliament of owls’
  • ‘A squabble of seagulls’
  • ‘A smack of jellyfish’

Shakespeare invented some pretty brilliant words that we still use today, ‘Swagger’ being one. Meaning to strut your stuff, it’s still around four centuries later. Now that’s pure #Swagger.

The word maverick came from Sam Maverick, a 19 century Texan who refused to brand his cattle – which became known as mavericks.

These books are jammed full off interesting words, phrases and facts that we loved learning about – every day’s a school day at Milestone. Next time you visit the barn make sure to check out our library and give them a read.
