Out of office - behind the scenes

Indulge us if you will in a short tale of what makes us tick as an agency, one which owes a huge debt to our location on the South Coast. Yes, we do maintain a residency at the Brewhouse & Kitchen, and we let off steam through the occasional park run, yoga session, beach BBQ or staff outing. But with summer rapping insistently on the windows, we embarked on our first BBD Micro-adventure.

We can’t claim the idea this time - the 5 to 9 microadventure is the brainchild of Alastair Humphreys, who has long been championing the virtues of the ‘brief adventurous escape’. In our case, that meant leaving BBD Towers at 5.30pm sharp and travelling in bike convoy to the Sandbanks Ferry, gateway to the Isle of Purbeck.

With the sun and temperature dropping, we regrouped for faggots, mash and real ale at the Bankes Arms before heading down to an undisclosed location to strike wild camp. We shared a selection of digestifs around a well-maintained fire, talked nonsense, and spent a night under the stars with only a bivvy bag for warmth, and the sound of the SBS training offshore to put us to sleep.

At sunrise, we mustered, removed every last trace of our presence, and set a bearing for Sandbanks once more, reaching the office with time to spare for a Greggs bap. It was early, as in arriving at work before Client Services early.

What was the point, you may ask? It was the challenge of sleeping on Studland Beach an undisclosed location rather than looking across to it from town. It was the opportunity of celebrating a summer to remember. And it was just the chance to spend time with colleagues without a brief, scamp or deadline in sight.

And here’s the thing. We want to go again, so we’re inviting any other like-minded agencies in town to get in touch and join us on the next one. We’re incredibly lucky and proud to be based in Bournemouth. Who else wants to make the most of it with us?
